Karate-Do Kyohan: The Master Text

Karate-Do Kyohan: The Master Text
Nineteen kata ("forms") of karate-the art of self-defense without weapons-are presented here in complete detail. They are the ones selected by the great master and teacher, Gichin Funakoshi, to give comprehensive training in Karate-do, the way of karate.

Fully illustrated demonstrations by the translator cover not only every technique of the kata but also the fundamentals and applications: how to make a fist; the correct form of the open hand; preliminary training in blocking, striking and kicking; the seven stances; and sparring.

The author presents, besides kata that he himself originated, beginning and advanced kata from both the Shorei school and the Shorin school, the former remarkable for their forcefulness and development of strength, the latter characterized by their gracefulness and lightning swiftness.

This book, the most comprehensive and authoritative ever published, was being revised by the author shortly before his death in 1957, at the age of eighty-eight, and is translated for the first time. Through his advice on both practical and spiritual aspects of training, the master guides the student from techniques to the Way of karate. Complementing the English edition are illustrations of National Treasures from Kofuku-ji and Todai-ji temples in Nara and Master Funakoshi's calligraphy.

Karate, whose value for the well-rounded development of strength, coordination and agility is scientifically validated, can be practiced at any time and in any place, for any length of time, by men and women of all ages, and requires no special equipment. It also fosters the development of spiritual qualities: courage, courtesy, integrity, humility and self-control.

Gichin Funakoshi's karate books, the first published in 1922, are landmarks, for the development of this martial art in Okinawa was shrouded in secrecy, and almost no records of its early history, dating back more than a thousand years to the Shao-lin Temple in Hunan Province, China, exist. Karate-do Kyohan is a book that lives up to its title: it is in truth the master text for karate instruction at all levels and in all aspects of technique and character development.

Reviews :
Gichin Funakoshi was the founder of modern karate. His style is known as shotokan, from his nickname Shoto. Every karate and tae kwon do style in the world today is descended from Funakoshi. Ancient Korean tae kwon do is a lost art. Modern TKD borrowed heavily from Funakoshi.

Nearly 200 of the book's 250 pages are devoted to katas, the choreographed forms of karate. There are 17 katas carefully explained and illustrated. I learned some of these 30 years ago. You forget a lot in 30 years - although not so much if it's been drummed into your head enough. Anyway here they are - move by move, good as new. They are great practice tools for when you don't have a partner. Doing kata is a lot more interesting than repetitive drills.

Reviews :
As a student of Sensei Ertl for the past four years and a grateful new Shodan (first degree black belt) I can vouch for the authenticity of the Heian Kata DVD. Senseis Ertl and Bendickson are clearly dedicated to the spirit of traditional Japanese Shotokan karate. Their dedication is obvious in the quality and completeness of this (and their many other) instructional DVDs. I'm one of those people who has a hard time remembering katas, even after I do them many times over. Along with my 3-4 hours per week in the dojo, I used this DVD regularly during my first two years of karate training in pursuit of my orange, green, and purple belts. Other reviewers have mentioned the exceptional high quality production of this DVD, but I'd like to add that all of the video footage is shot, edited, and produced by the Senseis themselves in their St. Paul, MN dojo, which is the same place I and many dozens of diligent students worked our way through black belt any beyond over the past 30 years.

Reviews :
This knife was designed over 40 years ago for Mr. Hibben's black belt thesis in American Kenpo Karate under Ed Parker, and suffice it to say, no part of this knife was made in vain; every detail has a purpose.

Unusually for a knife, it is balanced like a fine sword. It has a lot of heft for a fighting knife, but the fine balance negates that. It is high quality, attractive and finely built. It has the original red and black stripes in the hilt, with a heavy brass pommel and guard, and a large but finely shaped wood handle. The pommel has a lanyard hole.

It comes with a quality, sturdy leather sheath. It's not versatile, with only a belt loop allowing for a right hander a same side overhand draw, or an overhand cross draw.

The false-edge is flat and unsharpened, unlike the original (I put in a lot of work with a file and sharpened mine). The edge is sharp, but not too sharp, especially near the tip, and it was a bit assymetrically sharpened on one side as compared to the other near the point. Some slight file work and a short time on a stone brought it entirely to a fine razor edge, however.

Reviews :
This bag is much better than the normal bop bags as far as rebound action. The old style falls all the down to the ground an then SLOWLY comes back to standing position. This one much more like a real bag snapping back and not hitting the ground unless you hit it to hard of coarse. My kid's are 4 and 5 years and only use the bag SUPERVISED being taught PROPER punching/elbow/knee and kicking strikes!I would never leave this bag alone with them to thrash on , it would break real quick and with a h20 base ,not good.GREAT FOR YOUNG KIDS TO LEARN ON....(NOT BEAT ON) the key is always, learn to strike GOOD then worry about how hard...

Reviews :
For the price you can't beat this knife. I have several, and they work just fine, my main complaint being that the heavy butt's taper is so thick that it tends to force your grip up toward the guard. Other than that it works great for what it's intended to do.

I have lots of rubber knives from various makers that I use for knife practice. The ones from Cold Steel are also excellent since you can get several nicely made models.

One tip for you kali, escrima, and knife defense enthusiasts out there, try doing your combinations and drills with both the regular and reverse grip. You'll find that the standard 5 or 8 or 12 angles of attack, whatever you use in your system, change quite a bit, especially for the defanging the snake drills. If you're trying to defang using the reverse grip, and your partner is using the regular grip, you'll notice the angle and the technique has to change a bit, and also if you're both in reverse grip. Also try your combinations with the checking hand with the opponent in the reverse grip and see how much harder they are to get right.

In some ways, the reverse grip is more versatile and powerful defending against the regular grip, because of the useful hooking and tip parries that can be done, especially since the tip down lower wing block is a weak block because of the position of the wrist. On the other hand, it's easier in many ways to defang the snake if you're defending in the regular grip and the opponent is in the reverse grip.

Anyway, just a few tips for you knife enthusiasts out there. I am a kali/escrima instructor myself with black belts in karate and kung fu also, and have been teaching and training in the martial arts for over 40 years.

Sanchin Kata: Three Battles Karate Kata

Sanchin Kata: Three Battles Karate Kata
Traditional Training Methods for Karate Power The Sanchin Kata, or 'Three Battles Sequence', is an ancient form that can be traced back to the roots of karate. Some consider it the missing link between Chinese kung fu and Okinawan karate. Sanchin Kata is known to develop extraordinary quickness and generate remarkable power. This program breaks down the form piece by piece, body part by body part, so that the hidden details of the kata are revealed. Regular practice of Sanchin Kata conditions the body, trains correct alignment, and teaches the essential structure needed for generating power within all of your karate movements. Many karate practitioners believe that Sanchin Kata holds the key to mastering the traditional martial arts. Though it can be one of the simplest forms to learn, it is one of the most difficult to perfect. Goju-Ryu 5th-dan Kris Wilder offers in-depth exploration of Sanchin Kata, with detailed instruction of the essential posture, linking the spine, generating power, and demonstration of the complete Sanchin Kata. Simply put, your Karate will never be the same. Reviews :
Sensei Kris Wilder has done a marvelous job presenting the all-important intricacies of the sanchin kata in this highly informative DVD. The production values are of high quality, to include beautifully filmed footage outside where the kata is performed on forest paths and even on a rocky creek bed, to the excellent camera work in the studio that allows the viewer to see the presentation from all angles.

The sensei breaks down the kata by body part, beginning at the feet and progressing up to the head, explaining in rich detail the dos and don't of each that will help you bring out the best in your sanchin form and, in time, your other kata, your basic technique, and even your sparring.

Take it from a martial artist who has been training since 1965, this information -crammed DVD is a winner.

Loren W. Christensen, author of dozens of books on the martial arts and seven instructional DVDs.

Reviews :
Since these are a little bigger than most focus mits(they wobble more if not hit in the center), it forces the striker to aim better. The forearm retaining straps compensate alot for the wobble too however. And a good price. Mine have lasted through about a thousand strikes with no damage yet. Pay attention to what you are ordering though. I ordered these thinking they were larger kicking targets.

I bought this for my kids who are in Kempo Karate and it's a great size and it feels and looks sturdy to handle the task of kicking and punching.

Reviews :
This is a good quality lightweight uniform. It allows you to work up a good sweat and is light enough for sparring and good form work. It has a snap that you usually do not get with a lightweight gi such as this. Its not a power snap that you get from a traditional heavyweight gi, but I was surprised at the result. This is a good entry level uniform for somebody who is starting out in karate training.

I purchased one of these for my grandson when he started his Little Ninja karate lessons. He outgrew that one, and so we needed a second one. Both uniforms were good quality, and the little guy loves wearing them. When it's time for another, I know I can purchase it with confidence.
